The streams and rivers originating and flowing through the Western Ghats Hotspot in peninsular India is an exceptional area of freshwater fish diversity and endemism. This region, along with associated river systems of peninsular India harbours around 290 freshwater fishes of which 189 species (65%) are endemic. The high levels of endemism is not only conspicuous at the species level but also at the generic level, where 12 genera (11%) are endemic to this region.
